well, it's been a hot-minute since i last checked in. i was in phillly at the end of june to help out at the kimmel center's summer solstice celebration and for a much anticipated visit with family and friends. it was wonderful, and i have to admit that coming back to toronto was really tough, and has been for the last few weeks. i'm liking this city more and more, but it's numbing sometimes to know virtually no one here and know everyone back at home is in their normal, and your old, routine. BUT, it was a validating trip in the fact that although i had such a great time catching up with everyone, i knew i wouldn't be happy if i was still there. i needed this adventure and am so glad i seized the opportunity- and know i'll get through this spell of homesickness eventually. that said, if anyone knows of some great events this weekend in TO, please pass them along! it would be great to get out and meet some new people.
tonight i saw the kronos quartet and tanya tagaq, an inuit throat singer, perform their nunavut program as part of the luminaTO festival. i was familiar with and interested in kronos for sometime and saw tanya at WOMEX in sevilla and was totally turned off. needless to say, i snagged some rush tickets and there i was. to my surprise they complimented each other extremely well and it was one of the more incredibly organic musical experiences i've had in a while. contrary to the first time i saw tanya, i'm now really excited to delve more into the history and practice of inuit throat singing.
AND, i'm really excited for this weekend and more luminaTO, nxne events, and shows we're doing at work. tomorrow i'm working the bad plus show at the glenn gould studio. on saturday, i'm planning on an afternoon of free events at the harbourfront centre and distillery, then seeing the mark morris dance group on saturday evening and then seeing evil dead the musical at around 11pm, and maybe some more nxne shows after that. i have to say, if the summer keeps up like this it's going to be a great one.
